Tia Oostenbrug was born and raised in Abbotsford, British Columbia, where she was fortunate enough to begin dancing at the young age of three. She trained in many styles of dance including jazz, tap, lyrical, ballet, and hip hop. At the age of 12, Tia began working towards specializing in tap dance under the direction of Bonnie-Jean Anderson.
Tia soon became a member of the Western Canadian Tap Team from ages 13-16, travelling to Reisa, Germany, twice to compete in the International Tap Dance Championships. The routines Tia was a part of brought home three silver medals and one bronze medal over the course of two years.
Tia has been the recipient of a variety of scholarships and distinctions within the tap field including Surrey Festival’s Most Promising Tap Dancer, one of the highest esteemed awards in the festival. She also regularly attends festivals, intensives, and drop in classes with some of the best tap choreographer’s in North America to keep her own talents fresh.
Later on Tia started taking hip hop lessons under Paul Otterbein’s guidance. In her second year of dancing she was named Assistant Captain of the team. Tia continues to invest time in learning new styles within hip hop to keep up with the ever changing style.
Tia is excited to share her knowledge and passion of dance with the students and hopes they will fall in love with it just as much as she has!
